Free vs paid antivirus: do you actually need to pay?

Plenty of people pay for antivirus they don't need, and plenty of businesses rely on free protection that doesn't fit how they work. Here's how to decide honestly.

What every Windows laptop already has

Windows 10 and 11 include Microsoft Defender Antivirus at no cost. For a typical home user who keeps Windows updated and is careful with downloads and links, that is a reasonable baseline, provided it is actually switched on and up to date. Our guide Is Windows Defender enough? shows how to check.

When free is enough

  • A personal laptop used for browsing, email, streaming and banking.
  • You keep Windows updated and restart when asked.
  • You have backups of the files that matter.
  • Nobody else depends on that computer for their work or data.

In that case, the best use of your money is often a good backup and a password manager, not another anti-virus. Free tools like CitadelLite help by making sure the free protection you already have is set up properly.

When paying makes sense

  • You run a business. Someone needs to see whether every computer is protected and do something when an alert fires.
  • You handle other people's personal information. POPIA requires reasonable security safeguards, and being able to show what protection was in place matters.
  • You want alerts explained. A paid product can offer analysis and plain-language explanations instead of cryptic warnings.
  • You want support. Someone to ask when something looks wrong.

Questions to ask before you pay

  1. What does it add beyond what Windows already includes?
  2. Can I see and manage every device from one place?
  3. What data does it send from my computer, and where to?
  4. What happens when the subscription renews, and how do I cancel?
  5. Does it come with scare-tactic pop-ups or bundled extras? If so, walk away.

How Citadel fits

CitadelLite Free Anti-Virus is free forever for keeping a normal laptop safe. CitadelFrame AI is our paid product for people and businesses who want AI-assisted analysis and reporting to an IT team. CitadelGate lets IT providers manage and fix every computer they look after. All three are in development; join the waiting lists to hear when they launch.

Frequently asked questions

Is free antivirus safe to use?

Reputable free protection, such as Microsoft Defender in Windows, is safe. Be wary of unknown 'free' tools that show adverts, push upgrades with scary warnings or come bundled with other software.

Do paid antivirus products detect more viruses?

Not automatically. Detection quality varies by product, free or paid. What paid products usually add is management, support, extra features and analysis, not simply more detections.

What should a small business use?

A protection product it can manage centrally, so someone can see that every computer is protected and act on alerts, plus backups, updates and multi-factor authentication.
